The English Bulldog History
The English Bulldogs roots are firmly planted in England as they have been mentioned
in many written works throughout history. Shakespeare refers to the breed in King Henry, VI. English
Bulldogs was originally bred to take part in a sport that was called Bull Baiting where the bull was tethered
to a stake and then attacked by dogs. This was a national sporting pastime for the English. It was considered
necessary to "Bull Bait" to drain the bull of poison and to tenderize the beef. The ancestry of the breed
originated from the Alaunt. The Alaunt was considered a butchers dog to help control oxen
by bringing them into their stalls and making them stay there. As the Bulldog evolved it was further used as
a guard dog, and a hunting dog and for the sport of baiting. Now breeders concentrate on developing their
non-ferocious traits. The English Bulldog is now a very popular loveable tame dog that has many good family
qualities.
English Bulldog Appearance
According to the American Kennel Club the perfect English Bulldog must be of medium size and smooth coat; with heavy, thick-set, low-swung body,
massive short-faced head, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. The general appearance and attitude should
suggest great stability, vigor and strength. The disposition should be equable and kind, resolute and
courageous (not vicious or aggressive), and demeanor should be pacific and dignified. These attributes
should be countenanced by the expression and behavior.
English Bulldog Temperament
English Bulldogs are an ideal pet as they love to be in the company of their family. They adore
children and make an excellent companion to them because of their gentle, yet sometimes stubborn
nature. English Bulldogs are laid-back, loyal good natured and undemanding companion who would
make a great companion for the elderly. Do not feel guilty for not walking them as they are
known as the "couch potato". Contrary to popular belief they do not drool, but they may snore.
English Bulldogs can also be humorous, even comical which will add to their charm.
English Bulldog Health Problems
The modern English Bulldogs have some imperfections brought about by modern breeders,
especially show breeders, perpetuate the health problems with every litter they produce. They suffer from hip problems, heart problems, and skin problems.
Their compromised respiratory system makes it very risky to anesthetize them.
